Ah, menopause! It's that change of life that every woman dreads but knows is inevitable. During the early teen years a girl begins to menstruate monthly, and with the exception of pregnancies, this 28-day cycle of menstruation continues until she's past the child-bearing years. Then, good ol' menopause shows up for act 2.

Most women sail through menopause with hardly a problem, but for some women menopause is a terrible time of life. Hot flashes (jokingly called "power surges") are common. Hormones go crazy and mood changes are frequent. When these symptoms appear, a woman usually rushes to her medical doctor seeking relief. The medical profession refers to treatments other than those by medical doctors as CAM (Complementary Alternative Medicine).

Women who opt for CAM as opposed to HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) use vitamin and mineral supplements, soy supplements and soy foods, and the herbal supplement black cohosh.

Women also use meditation, relaxation and deep breathing techniques, essential oils (such as evening primrose), baths and massages, and red clover supplements to relieve menopausal symptoms.

There's no "cure" for menopause other than time. Traditional medical practitioners can prescribe drugs that may (or may not) relieve symptoms, but all synthetic prescription medications have one or several nasty little potential side effects, whereas no CAM treatments have side effects of any kind.

Many women turn to acupuncture to relieve the symptoms of menopause and acupuncture has proven to be very, very effective in relieving menopausal symptoms and without any side effects at all. The idea of acupuncture to relieve the symptoms of menopause is to "re-establish a harmonious state of the body" by restoring chi and balancing yin and yang.

There are also nutritionally based CAM treatments for menopause. Soy-based foods, for example, contain isoflavones and are similar to estrogen.

I will vote up for your hub. I completely agree that menopause and puberty are in some case similar. The arrival of both is announced with hormonal disorders and initially they both give jitters. I also support your theory of using “CAM” to deal with menopause. In my case, I was able to successfully deal with hot flashes, night sweats and mood swings after I started doing yoga and meditation. I ate healthy, drank lot of water and finally used 2-pills of Femestra a day. Femestra has boosted my estrogen levels to near perfect levels within 6 months of usage so that I do not have to bother about hot flashes any more. Femestra is a powerhouse of over hundred vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that gives my body with added comfort needed by it at this time. You too can try this natural supplement and learn more about it by visiting http://www.femestra.com/ .
