Conventional Medicine vs. Alternative Medicine
75
Conventional or traditional medicine is practice by medical doctors who have attended and graduated from recognized medical schools. Their training is
extensive and lasts for several years. Yet, medical doctors have only two tools at their disposal for actually treating illness: a prescription pad and a scalpel.
Oh, medical doctors have or have access to all kinds of really high-tech testing equipment; but when it comes right down to actually treating a patient, they can prescribe drugs or perform surgery. That's not to say that we need to drown all medical doctors.

Alternative medicine, on the other hand, offers all kinds of actual treatments; acupuncture, acupressure, chiropractic adjustments, aromatherapy, and massage, PLUS herbal supplements (all of which are the basis upon which the synthetic drugs prescribed by medical doctors are based). That's not to say that we all need to quit seeing medical doctors and start seeing alternative medicine practitioners.
It's my not-so-humble opinion that the best choice is to choose both. We all need to become active participants in the decisions that are made concerning our health. We don't really HAVE to choose either conventional medicine OR alternative medicine. We can combine them. We can use some of each.
BUT, when we use some of each, we need to tell our medical doctors what alternative medicine we are applying (some herbs and prescription drugs don't work well together, and some combinations can even be deadly). We also need to tell our herbalist or our chiropractor or our massage therapist or our acupuncturist about what traditional medical treatments we are receiving. And we need to keep ourselves informed, as well.
This combination of traditional or conventional medicine and alternative medicine is called "complementary medicine." It's taking the best of two worlds and mixing them together to get the best total medical care available.

Sadly, it is a pill-popping society in today's world, as the prescription drug industry is, of course, a mega-money maker. Doctoral advice is not always right, especially when it comes to treatment methods & drugs, and that's for sure. So, it is always good to research and have multiple resources to compare & contrast.
...Nice hub! ;)
