Alternative Medicines for ADHD and ADD
66
ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) or ADD (Attention-Deficit Disorder) is not a diagnosis that parents want to hear. Parents realize that their child is hyperactive, has difficulty concentrating, and, if they are already of school age, can't seem to keep up with their classmates. It's not news to parents that their children are out of control.
The usual first step is to take the child to a medical doctor. The doctor will run tests (that's what doctors do). But ADHD or ADD doesn't show up on any x-ray or in any blood test. There's no diagnostic tool that can definitively say that a child (or an adult for that matter) has ADHD or ADD.
The diagnosis is made solely on information provided by parents and observing the child. If certain criteria are met, the child is diagnosed with ADHD or ADD. The same is true of adults. Many adults today are diagnosed with ADHD or ADD.
Ritalin is the best-known medication prescribed for children who have been diagnosed with ADHD, but there are others; Adderall, Dexedrine, Desoxyn, Cylert, and antidepressant medications.
But these drugs are not the only choice of treatment. There are nutritional and dietary treatments that can help children and adults with ADHD or ADD as well. Some examples of nutritional treatments are: carbohydrate/protein-balanced diet, management of food sensitivities, and the Feingold diet that eliminates food additives and preservatives.
ADHD and ADD were treated with herbs long before there was a name for the disorders. Herbalists usually treat ADHD and ADD with various combinations of ginkgo, brahmi, Siberian ginseng, gotu kola, and green oats.
A Chinese herbal preparation called Tiaoshen Liquor has been used to treat hyperactive children with positive results. And the Calm Dragon formula has also proved effective.
