Alternative Medicine for Back Pain

More and more people today are seeking alternative medicine solutions for their back pain. Back pain is the most common skeletal pain problem, probably because the spine is involved in almost every movement of the human body. It's easy to cause back pain; a quick or unusual movement can do it, walking on uneven surfaces can do it, bending or twisting can do it, and lifting can certainly do it.

Medical doctors write prescriptions for pain medication and muscle relaxers (both have some dreadful side effects) and advise bed rest and heat packs. Those are the only solutions that they have available to relieve simple back pain. None of these measures are very effective, and none of them address the problem that is causing the back pain. That may be why so many back pain sufferers are turning to alternative medicine for back pain relief.

Many sufferers of back pain find relief by seeing a chiropractor. Chiropractors can adjust the alignment of the spine and provide almost instant back pain relief. You'll hear the uninformed refer to chiropractors as "bone crackers" — but for relief of back pain, there is no better treatment. Often it takes several adjustments to correct the problem that's causing the back pain. Chiropractors sometimes see back pain patients three times a week at the beginning of treatment and then slowly reduce the frequency of adjustments as the spine begins to stay in the correct alignment longer.

Acupuncture is another alternative medicine pain management discipline. Usually acupuncture is used in conjunction with herbal medicines.

Most often a combination of chiropractic adjustments, acupuncture, and herbal medicine is the best back pain relief choice. The chiropractic adjustment puts the spinal column into alignment, acupuncture relieves the pain, and the herbal medicines advised help to prevent future back pain.

I'm a big fan of both chiropractors and acupuncture. Even though these practices have strong detractors, I know a lot of people who have gotten great help through Chinese medicine.
